A little bit help would sure be appreciated

Hi all
Within my dissertation I want to differentiate between game play and watching a movie, it would help enormously if you game players could tell me;

A) How long in hours (or sessions) a game takes to complete.
B) The average amount of hours you put in per playing session.

I know you will all jump on it varies and it depends, all I am after is ball park, educated guess, estimate...

Alright Dave its abit hard to say really depending on what type of game it is. I would say normally a game can take about 10 hours if its a first person shooter say. Adventure games can take slighty longer between 15 to 20 hours. On the other hand an RPG can takes up your whole life up for example Oblivion, i clocked up 120 hrs and still never completed all of the side quests.
As for how many hours i put in per playing session (not of late because im so busy with my college work.) I would say on average about 2 to 3 hours. Having said that i have been known to sit there all day so that could be up to 8 hours.
Hope this is what your after Dave. If you need anymore info just give me a shout.

Alright Dave,

Here are my opinions,

1) It completely depends on the title, or even the genre. For example, an RPG (Role Playing Game) can take as long as 100 hours to fully complete, by that I mean 100% the title. Whereas, a downloadable title can take as little as an hour to fully complete. However, the RPG may only draw your attention as a game for one sitting, but the downloadable title may be a very addictive game, therefore you could spend more time playing that in the long run. Like I said though every title is different.

2) This is kind of the same as the first answer, some titles tend to be developed to bring a user back to playing them. By that I mean have a long lifespan of playability. For example, if you play a title like an FPS (First Person Shooter) you will have options such as Multiplayer Online, Multiplayer Splitscreen, as well as the normal career mode. Multiplayer functions are designed so that when you have completed a career mode the title will still make you want to play it. So again, there is no average to the amount of hours played with one session, it will always be varied.
